A General Overview of a Socialist Realist Novel in Terms of its Themes: A Case of and Quiet Flows the Don

Mikhail Sholokhov is one of the socialist realist authors who has an important place in Russian literature. Sholokhov who produced a number of works as both story and novel author tried to direct society by creating his own style.  This study called A General Overview of a Socialist Realist Novel In Terms Of Its Themes: A Case of And Quiet Flows The Don investigates the themes of the above mentioned novel. The fact that the novel, And Quiet Flows The Don offers rich thematic material became a determining factor in preferring this work as a case study. Sholokhov telling the Don Kazaks in the novel scrutinizes their lifestyles, customs, habits, tragedies, the village and steppe life, the revolution, the war, the death from various aspects. In this study, firstly, the life of the author and the context of the novel was explained, then the main theme and the most frequent themes were tried to detect. Family, family values, nostalgia, love, woman, betrayal, ethics, honour, conscience, homesickness, native land, war, revolution, religion, nature, conflict of generations, and the like are main themes in this work including rich themes. These themes mentioned by the author were discussed by giving examples from the text.  The main aim of the article was to carry out the content analysis of the novel, And Quiet Flows The Don in terms of thematic aspect.
